Fellowships

Our fellows leave with an understanding of how grantmaking is done, an appreciation of the complexities of grantor and grantee relationships, and perhaps most importantly, a better sense of the diverse nonprofit field in New York and beyond.

Graduate Student Philanthropy Fellowships

Each spring, The Trust welcomes a new cohort of graduate student fellows who bring fresh energy and ideas to our grantmaking, marketing and communications, donor, and legal teams.

The Fellowship application is posted in January, with applications due in February or March. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a graduate program during the fellowship year. Fellows gain hands-on experience in New York’s nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, working full-time (35 hours a week) in the summer and part-time (20 hours a week) during the school year.

Compensation is $25 an hour. The positions are based in our New York office and fellows are eligible for The Trust’s remote work options.

“My fellowship was a wonderful way to learn the nuances of grantmaking and philanthropic advising, and how to translate this complex work to a broad audience. I now have a deep admiration for community foundations, especially The New York Community Trust.”

Hannah Williams, former fellow, current vice president, Culture and Community Division at Zions Bank

"I learned invaluable lessons and best practices about aligning program strategy to be responsive and center diverse, evolving communities’ needs as core principles and priorities, especially during disaster response, health crises and epidemics, economic distress, as well as beacons of innovation in rural America."

Jasmine Thomas, former fellow, current senior director, Innovation + Society at Microsoft

"My fellowship introduced me to grantmaking in the areas of chronic diseases, environmental health, mental health, and health systems and policy. That experience helped me secure my first job after graduate school at The California Endowment, where I made grants aimed at improving the diversity and cultural competence of the state’s health workforce."

George Zamora, former fellow, current senior policy analyst, University of California Office of the President

“The philanthropy fellowship was such an incredible and immersive experience. Not only did I gain valuable insight into the philanthropic and nonprofit worlds, but I also developed a deeper understanding of my community and a passion for supporting my neighbors.”

Mar Asayan, former fellow, current senior digital media and graphic designer, The New York Community Trust
